The final team has been selected for the World Junior Men's Championships
that will begin on July 10 in Palmerston North, New Zealand.
Four players will comprise "Team USA", and the team players plus four
others will compete in the individuals. Trevor McGuinness, a southpaw
Pennsylvanian who trains at Merion Cricket, along with Massachusetts native
Mark Froot, who trains at the Harvard Club in Cambridge, earned automatic
team berths. They have held the #1 and 2
national rankings respectively for the entire year and clinched their
positions following their appearance in the national juniors B-U-19 finals
that McGuinness won.
TRIALS
The trials for the remaining two team positions was played in a closed
tournament format at SquashBusters' Boston facility. Chris "CJ" Plimpton of
Connecticut, who trains at
Westchester Squash, the Club at 800 and Sportsplex, took on New Yorker
Reed Endresen, who trains at at New York's Apawamis Club. Endresen won in
five close games. In the other bracket, Todd Harrity, another Merion
Cricket trained
player who also was McGuinness' high school teammmate, defeated fellow
Pennsylvanian Chris Callis, who trains at Germantown Cricket and the
Squash Club at CHASS, in four games.
Endresen
In the next round, Endresen faced Cynwyd Club trained Todd Ruth, the
fourth Philly on the squad, who had a first round bye. Endresen won again
in four placing him in the finals against Harrity. The finals was a
teriffic display of athleticism, talent and stamina with Endresen winning
in a five games to take the third spot on the team, with the fourth
position taken by Harrity. Callis took the fifth spot by defeating Ruth in
a 3/4 playoff, and Plimpton will play seventh. David Canner, who trains at
DC's Results and
missed the trials due to an injury, will be the eighth player on the squad.
TRAINING SCHEDULE
Coaches Chris Smith and Preston Quick have set a training schedule that
includes three weeks of intensive work outs before the tournament. In the
meanwhile, all the squad members are finishing year end classes, taking
exams and four [McGuinness, Froot, Ruth and Canner] preparing for
graduation.
