28 September 2006, Team Play

Just a quick update from the coach's perspective.

Today we beat Spain ensuring at top-12 finish. We are optimistic about beating Hong Kong tomorrow though it will be a battle. Be beat them in 2004 and plan to repeat...

In the match today, Latasha battled to find her form but dug in and kept plugging away on a very hot court. This was a very good day for her not to bring her "A" game (if there had to be one day) and we expect her to rise to the occasion in the last two matches.

Louisa played second today and played a very good, focused match. She converted numerous drops and kept her opponent guessing. It was good timing for her to have her game come together as we enter the last two matches and was a good confidence builder.

Ivy played last at #3 and won a dead rubber match. She got her feel for match play after resting the previous three matches and in the second game was very aware of her opponent's positioning and time and again found the spaces on the court.

Though the group is a bit bored here between matches, we have found several very good restaurants and tonight feasted on excellent Indian food to power us for tomorrow. Onward. Go USA! Demer.

Yesterday we played Malaysia, the 4th seeds. They beat us 3-0 but all in all we are feeling good moving into two matches that are winnable. At #1 Nicol David was just too tough, but Latasha moved pretty well and extended the rallies.

Meredeth played second and was in the match with Sharon Wee. There were exciting exchanges at the front of the court and Meredeth was able to play good straight length which is crucial on these slick courts. It was frustrating for her not to be able to pull out at least one game, but having had that match and seeing how she feels will be a big help moving into the next two which are more within our reach. Louisa played the dead rubber match which is always a tough one to get excited about. She lost in 3 to a player who stretched the court very well with tight shots to the back and front. Louisa has had a lot of squash in the last few weeks and we expect that her competitive experience of late will be a big help today and tomorrow against Japan and New Zealand.

Today we will scout the New Zealand team in preparation for tomorrow and we will do our best to beat Japan, a match in which we feel we have a good shot at all three matches.
